Overnight guest.......

See this little guy....??

We've noticed him for the last few days .....hanging around the bird feeder......which is not so unusual.....except he sits there for long periods of time, eats and then disappears for a while....

Then yesterday....during the snow storm.....he didn't move...

The male child went out to investigate and came in saying....."the little guys eyes are closed......seeds are frozen to his beak and i walked right up to him.......I think he's blind!"

Wellllll........poor little guy was so wet with snow .... that seeds were frozen to his beak......and the winds were so strong he had his eyes closed to protect them......

Could not ...... could not......leave him outside......frozen bird pops on the front porch is not a pleasant sight...!!!!

Sooooo.....he spent the night in the cat carrier.......on a high shelf in the laundry room......with a snug warm towel and jar lids filled with seed and water.....

CityBoy took him outside this morning.......the little guy flew to the chain link fence and perched.....seems he can't fly very well.....

He's back in the carrier for another day of R&R......if he's no better tomorrow, we'll find a local animal rehaber......

Stay safe....warm.....and enjoy!!

  4. Thankfully that little bird has friends like you. He must be ill if he allowed you to catch him. Normally they are very fast. Hope he is better!

  8. when you said he may be blind, I was wondering if he had some respiratory trouble and his eyelids were sort of stuck together. Thank you for caring for him.

  9. I believe he is a Purple Finch or a House Finch - - - those two are very hard to tell apart.

I'm so glad you were there to look after him.

  11. Thank you for taking care of God's wonderful creation. I love watching the birds on our feeders outside our kitchen window....We have had many types of them lately with the cold and show/rain/sleet....we had one small bird that didn't see well either, but he does well flying.
So glad you had compassion on your little visitor. You will have to let us know how he does.
    Lovingly,

  13. So sweet of you to try to take care of him.
Last week when we were having a hard rain, I kept hearing a noise outside of my computer room window. I went to look and there was a little bird clinging to the windowscreen trying to stay out of the wind and rain. I fels to bad for him, but when I tried to go outside he flew away.

  14. Good for you taking care of the bird. He probably has some kind of disease for his eyes to be closed or maybe it took a cold. I would have done the same thing you did. Helen

  16. You are kind to take care of the ailing bird. I'm sure he would have died if you didn't bring him in. I hope he made it. We have alot of finches like him - red finches or house finches - like Keetha Broyles said, they are hard to tell apart.

There's a bird sickness in the Maryland/Wash DC area that affects alot of finches (and I've read it spreads to other songbirds but I've only seen it in finches) which makes them blind, sick, and eventually kills them. Every year I see several sick and blind finches. I always have to clean my bird feeders weekly in the summertime with bleach water to kill germs when I start seeing the ailing birds. i hope your little guy was just frozen and not sick!

  19. Awwww so sweet of you to take him in.
Last year I had baby Robins hatch on my porch wreath, and for almost three weeks, one of my best quilts lined the porch. I was afraid they would fall out of their nest and get hurt...
That must be one cold wind up there on the twelve acre woods.

  20. Awww from me too. So glad you noticed. That little House Finch wants to be an "in the house" House Finch. Thank you for caring.
Hope he makes it. He may be someone's pet that got away and is unable to adapt to the cold.
